Throughout Southeast Asia, there is arguably no other seagoing force that is modernising at the rate of the Philippine Navy (PN). In the past five years, the service has undergone an unprecedented transformation, including the induction of its largest ever warships – and bigger plans are already afoot.
The Philippine government has placed orders with South Korea for what will be the most sophisticated vessels yet to enter service. These acquisitions were partially fuelled by rising tensions with Beijing in the South China Sea between 2010 and 2015.
However a change in the Philippine administration in 2016 has brought with it a marked departure in bilateral relations with both the United States and China. The political upheaval will undoubtedly affect the country’s military procurement strategy.
