Australian industry to deliver support for Army vehicles

Minister for Defence Materiel Jason Clare today announced General Dynamics Land Systems had won a contract to provide support and maintain Army vehicles that are used in Australia and Afghanistan.
The company will provide support for the Army’s fleet of Abrams Tanks, Light Armoured Vehicles and Hercules Recovery Vehicles for at least the next five years.
"This means about 30 jobs across General Dynamics’ sites in Adelaide, Melbourne, Darwin and Brisbane," Mr Clare said.
"Each year we will spend around $20 million making sure these Army vehicles are maintained and fixing them if they break down.
"This is a performance-based contract, so payment is based on how well the company does its job."
Mr Clare said the contract would ensure faster supply of spare parts and quicker repairs.
"These combat vehicles need to have fast access to parts and services to make sure they are ready for operations if and when they’re needed," Mr Clare said.
"They do an important job in supporting our soldiers here and in Afghanistan, so they need to be ready to go.
"General Dynamics was the original manufacturer of both the Abrams Tanks, and the Light Armoured Vehicles.
"This makes them the experts on these vehicles and that’s important for making sure they are well-maintained."
