This paper will explore the need for naval platforms, which are inherently defensive in nature and there to support primarily events on land. This philosophy drives the use of ‘survivability’ as a measure of effectiveness of platforms to perform their roles. The paper also briefly considers ASMs, which are typical naval threats, and how these threats drive survivability.
