China bolsters ship-to-shore amphibious capabilities

China has purchased four Zubr-class Landing Craft Air Cushion (LCAC) hovercraft from the Ukraine in a £3.15 million deal. A spokesman confirmed that the hovercraft have been acquired for the People's Liberation Army Navy, with their use presumably for ship-to-shore amphibious operations. These hovering behemoths are four storeys high and have a payload capacity of 150 tonnes. They can carry 10 armoured vehicles or over 350 troops at a time in their four compartments.
