Rear Admiral Terry Loughran (Rt’d) gives an overview of the current state of the Royal Navy, offering priceless insight on its performance in comparison to other services in current operations in Iraq and Afghanistan. He focuses on the role that international trade has played in defining Royal Navy roles from the 1960s onwards. Maritime trade is the backbone of the UK, yet assessements of a 'balanced fleet' are increasingly falling short. In contrast, amphibious capabilities have come to the fore - and littoral dominance is a newly acquired domain for the RN. Yet, the overriding trend remains diminishing numbers in RN strength.
