10:00 AM Australia and Indonesia’s Coordinated Patrol for Shared Borders

Indonesia is one of Australia’s closest geographic neighbours and our countries’ share a vast maritime boundary that neither country can achieve comprehensive maritime domain awareness over without each other’s assistance and cooperation.  Our countries have been conducting joint coordinated patrols under the command of their respective civil maritime security authorities since 2010.

Maritime Border Command (MBC), a multi-agency task force within the Australian Border Force, is responsible for undertaking civil maritime security operations to detect, deter, respond to and prevent illegal activities in the Australian Maritime Domain. MBC completed its first iteration of Operation GANNET, a tripartite patrol with the Indonesian Coast Guard (BAKAMLA), and the Indonesian Ministry of Marine Affairs and Fisheries (KKP) in May 2018, and the second in October 2018.

The success of the coordinated patrols between our agencies is evident through a substantial reduction of foreign fishing vessels apprehended in Australia’s northern waters over the past 10 years. This case study will explore the use of single points of contact, strategies and maritime domain awareness for the successful trilateral mission.
