2007 Commander Austrian Contingent EUFOR and Chief Joint Military Affairs at HQ EUFOR / Bosnia and Hercegovina.

2007 to 2011 Chief Joint Operations Department / National Defence Academy, Vienna; 2011 – 2017 Head of the Defence Staff Division / General Staff.

2014 / 2015, Commander 3rd mechanized Infantry Brigade in Mautern.

September 2017 till July 2021 Director for Strategic Planning, Austrian General Staff and Deputy Capability Director.

July 2021 – January 2024 in Charge of the Directorate for Capability and Long-term Planning within the General Directorate for National Defence and National Capability Director.

Since February 2024 Director Capabilities & Planning and Deputy Chief of General Staff.

Frequent contributor to the military magazines „Österreichische Militärische Zeitschrift“ and „Truppendienst“. Various publications on questions of operational level warfare, military strategy and force planning. Author of the book „Moderne Seemacht” (Modern Seapower). Frequent lectures at the National Defence Academy on Military Strategy and Naval Warfare. Member of the Scientific Advisory Commission to the Ministry of Defence. Lieutnant General Hofbauer lives near Vienna with his wife Susie and his son.
