For the French Navy, the Exclusive Economic Zone comprises a new theatre, altogether, and therefore a new mission challenge. Self protection and electronic warfare are the traditional mainstay of larger warships, but offshore patrol vessels will incorporate more of these capabilities in the future. RESM (radar-band electronic support measures) is a specialised aspect of this domain, and proves ideal for prosecuting the anti-piracy policing missions of many OPVs.
