For the French Navy, the Exclusive Economic Zone comprises a new theatre, altogether, and therefore a new mission challenge. Self protection and electronic warfare are the traditional mainstay of larger warships, but offshore patrol vessels will incorporate more of these capabilities in the future. RESM (radar-band electronic support measures) is a specialised aspect of this domain, and proves ideal for prosecuting the anti-piracy policing missions of many OPVs. Philippe Deville is the Naval Operational Advisor for Thales and describes his view of the challenges in expanding EW suites on board these vessels, as well as the mission profiles they will be expected to meet.
