The head of a U.S. government agency responsible for helping respond to cyberattacks on government networks has resigned following several high-profile attacks on U.S. government computer systems.

Officials said Randy Vickers had resigned as director of the Computer Emergency Readiness Team, which is part of the U.S. Department Of Homeland Security's cybersecurity division.

The Homeland Security Department has not provided an explanation for his departure from the post.

The agency is responsible for helping defend U.S. government networks against cyberattacks.

The resignation follows a number of hacker attacks recently targeting the U.S. Department of Defense and public websites of the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) and U.S. Senate.
