In this Defence iQ interview, Arnel David, Director of Task Force Maven at NATO SHAPE, sets out how rapid advances in AI, data, and digital integration are beginning to reshape armoured warfare in practical terms - not just in theory.
Speaking ahead of the 2026 International Armoured Vehicles conference, Colonel David outlined how the Alliance is moving towards a more iterative, experimentation-led approach to capability development. From the growing role of AI-enabled systems to the challenge of achieving true digital interoperability across multinational forces, he highlights the shift towards faster decision-making cycles and closer human–machine collaboration on the battlefield.
His perspective is grounded in both operational and strategic experience. A U.S. Army strategist with multiple deployments across the Middle East, Central Asia, and the Pacific, Colonel David now leads Task Force Maven’s work on digital transformation within Allied Command Operations. His background spans conventional and special operations, alongside academic work in international relations and emerging technologies, including artificial intelligence.
While this conversation was first published in the lead-up to IAV 2026, the themes it raises have only become more relevant. The pace of technological change, and the pressure to translate it into deployable capability, continues to accelerate, particularly as lessons from recent conflicts reshape priorities across the armoured community.
Looking ahead, International Armoured Vehicles Conference 2027 (19–21 January 2027) will once again bring together the people driving those changes. Now in its 27th year, IAV has become the central meeting point for the global armoured vehicles community, attracting over 1,600 stakeholders from more than 55 nations. Military leaders, programme managers, government representatives, and industry will come together to share operational lessons, assess emerging technologies, and define the next phase of mounted capability.
For those tracking how armoured forces are adapting to a more complex and data-driven battlespace, this interview offers a useful reference point and a reminder of the conversations that will continue to evolve at IAV 2027.
