General David Petraeus has approved the deployment of US battle tanks to Afghanistan in an effort to hit insurgency harder while limiting close-range casualties. The commander of US and NATO forces in the region announced an initial wave of 16 Marine Corps-led M1 Abrams tanks to Helmand province, where the Taliban stronghold is embedded.
