Royal Navy Saves Nearly £30 Million Through 'River Class' Programme
The River Class Programme for the British Royal Navy is focused on fishery protection, which is its primary mission. It is also focused on training missions for junior officers. Those OPV vessels that carry out this tasking remain deployed at long intervals and are only put in for maintenance twice a year for 10 day intervals. In all, each ship is capable of being on call 320 days a year. Greater cost savings (nearly £30 million) are delivered to the RN from deploying these particular vessels, largely due to the requirement of smaller crews. In addition, there is overall greater support from contractor components.
