General Metz enlisted in the US Army in 1966, launching a military career that took him from his birthplace at Elkin, North Carolina, to the directorship of the Joint Improvised Explosive Device Defeat Organization (JIEDDO), of which he handed over command at the end of last year upon his retirement.
