In 2009 the Brazilian Defence Minister, Nelson Jobim, announced the beginning of a $6 billion contract to supply the Brazilian Army with 2,044 new armoured vehicles. According to IVECO’s Latin American president Marco Mazzu, the Guarani is one many programmes lending to the "renaissance of the defence industry in Brazil."
