Chuck Hagel, the former Republican Senator for Nebraska, has been nominated by president Obama as his choice to succeed Leon Panetta as the next U.S. Secretary of Defense.
Seen as a divisive figure, Hagel voted in favour of the Iraq Resolution in 2002 but later became a staunch critic of the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. He has also been smeared with anti-Semitic allegations following his less than patient views of the Israeli influence in Washington.
