The market for surface-to-air missile (SAM) systems is worth $30.6 billion over the next 10 years. An effective air defence system remains of vital importance, despite a lack of media-grabbing headlines in the Afghan and Iraqi fighting. Not since Operation Desert Storm have air defence missiles captured the attention of the media. The total number of surface-to-air missiles manufactured through 2019 will exceed 80,000. US and European countries will hold the greatest shares of this market, with the US in the lead.
