The experiences of recent operations in Afghanistan and Iraq have demonstrated the difficulties of conducting land-based operations to both military commanders and the general public alike. The cost in terms of financial resources, human lives and the very reputation of those nations involved has greatly impacted the likelihood that forces will be as quick and eager to engage again in such a theatre under all but the most extreme circumstances.
