RAF Selects Rivet Joint to Replace Nimrod R.1s

The Boeing RC-135 Rivet Joint electronic intelligence-gathering aircraft has been selected by the UK Ministry of Defence (MoD) to replace the Royal Air Force’s (RAF’s) current fleet of three BAE Systems Nimrod R.1 aircraft. Internal ministry approval for the controversial US solution for Project Helix, as the Nimrod R.1 replacement is dubbed by the RAF, was given during December 2009.
