Boeing's Mach 6 jet fails in test flight

The U.S. Air Force has conducted a test with an unmanned hypersonic jet that has been designed to reach speeds up to Mach 6. The jet, X-51A Waverider, was aboard a B-52 bomber that took off from Edwards Air Force Base in California on Tuesday. At 50,000 ft above the Pacific Ocean the Waverider was dropped from the B-52 in the hope that after free-falling for four seconds the X-51A’s supersonic combustion ramjet engine was expected to propel it to 70,000 ft.
