It is perhaps typical of Europe’s strange politics that three small states on the eastern shore of the Baltic Sea have provided some disproportionately large and contentious security discussions. Former Soviet states which, unlike Central Europe, Moscow still regards as its "near abroad", the integration of Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania into first the EU and then NATO was an important step in anchoring Europe’s northern border to the transatlantic security bubble.
