With a lucrative deal at stake, two helicopter giants are playing to win – but is there much between them? The competition to supply the Indian Navy with a multirole replacement to its Sea King helicopters continues to create tensions between the two competing vendors. The horns of NH Industries (NHI) and Sikorsky have been firmly locked for years, pitching the NH90 and the S-70B Seahawk, respectively. Much is riding on the package for 16 units, more so than just the $1 billion contract value...
The Turkish Land Forces identified a need for a new generation of attack helicopter capable of efficient performance at high altitudes in hot climates. The ATAK helicopter programme was launched to meet those needs and advance the country’s aeronautical industry. As part of the initiative, Turkish Aerospace Industries (TAI) joined forces with AgustaWestland to develop and build 91 T129 ATAK multirole combat helicopters, 59 of them on firm order and 32 options. Each is powered by two CTS800-4A turboshaft engines supplied by the Light Helicopter Turbine Engine Company (LHTEC), a 50/50 partnership between Honeywell International and Rolls-Royce plc. As far as rotary-wing aircraft go, there are few assets more desirable to almost any military in the modern world. Owing to their ability to carry out a vast range of missions and the rapidity at which they can be deployed for land, sea or air use, helicopters are key to any serious defence budget, be it purchasing new platforms or modernising existing ones. Of course, this range of capabilities also means that today’s aircraft are technologically complex, resulting in difficult decisions for programme managers and increasingly complicated processes for maintenance and upgrades.
Here, we explore the key operational aspects of the 21st century military helicopter – a ‘blueprint’, if you will, of the topics and considerations driving the 2016 Military Helicopter conference (Jan 18-20, London, UK)…

Defence Research Analyst Alix Leboulanger reports for Frost & Sullivan on the Helicopter market opportunities and growth strategies.
The 24th annual International Military Helicopter (IMH) conference will bring together the most influential stakeholders from across the global rotary wing community to delve into future procurement activities and investments that are delivering next-generation capabilities. With the size of the global military helicopter market expected to grow to $72.81 billion by 2027, IMH provides the most valuable annual forum to address the current challenges and priorities for rotary aviation.
