The main cyber threats target big money

The head of Europol’s European Cybercrime Centre (EC3), Troels Oerting, recently admonished businesses that still fail to take cyber threats seriously. Speaking at the tail end of what has become an annual cyber security awareness month, his words underscored the fact that one of the biggest concerns to global stability is in the unknown dangers of an online world rather than those we expect.

"Companies that do not think information security is important should reconsider, otherwise they could end up going out of business," Oerting said, in a statement we should think is redundant as we approach 2015."We know of a lot of cyber crimes that are very costly to business that are not reported to the police."

Unreported cybercrime is an escalating concern. A trend among corporations to not alert authorities about major breaches of data or finances stems from a fear of reputational damage, which could in turn impact market confidence and share prices. However, this means that it becomes more imperative for businesses to at least take greater responsibility for their own security measures, an effort that requires constant work just to remain a step ahead of those looking to commit theft and fraud.
