Poland is looking to purchase 70 military helicopters in a deal that is more than double the number originally sought by the East European country earlier this year when it put out a tender for 26 helicopters for up to $960 million.

No price tag has been put on the latest procurement drive but Prime Minister Donald Tusk said the cost was “gigantic,” with some reports suggesting it could be worth up to $3 billion. The first delivery is expected by 2014 with AgustaWestland and Sikorsky Aircraft firm favourites to win the bid, although Eurocopter is also expected to figure.

“We’re determined to speed up and expand our helicopter plans,” Tusk said according to the PAP news agency.
