On 6 June 1944, 150,000 British, US and Canadian forces landed at Normandy on the coast of northern France. It marked the first stage of Operation Overlord – the Allied plan to invade Nazi-occupied Europe and bring the war to a conclusion – and was the largest amphibious assault the world had ever seen.
