Major General Miguel Freire is the Commander of the Intervention Brigade, Portuguese Army. He has served extensively in armoured cavalry units within the Portuguese Army Mechanized Brigade, commanding formations from platoon to battalion level, including Leopard 2 A6 tanks, and holding staff officer roles at both battalion and brigade level. His operational experience includes deployments to Kosovo (2000-2001) as Reconnaissance Squadron Commander and to Afghanistan (2008) as a staff officer at ISAF HQ in Kabul. He has published research and articles on armoured tactics, training, and operations, as well as on international relations, strategy, and military history, in publications across Portugal, the UK, and the USA. He has also led a research project on the tactical and leadership performance of Portuguese officers commanding combat units during World War I in Africa. He was also deployed to Iraq (2016-2017) as a staff officer in Combined Joint Task Force Land Component Command in Bagdad.
