Mike Moroney

Mike Moroney, Executive Director Defence AI Centre 27 October 2025 Mike Moroney commenced as the Executive Director of the Defence AI Centre on 13 October 2025.


Prior to joining the Defence AI Centre as a member of the Australian Public Service, Mike Moroney spent 23 years in the Royal Australian Air Force. In the latter part of his Air Force career, Mike Moroney led several technology innovation teams. As a Wing Commander, Mike was the AI lead for Jericho Disruptive Innovation, where he led AI integration into capabilities, championed Responsible AI practices and elevated AI readiness by adapting Air Forces people, partnerships, practices, and digital infrastructure to be fit-for-AI.


Mike Moroney has also led the Augmented Aviation Asset Intelligence and CASG Next Generation Acquisition and Sustainment teams where he implemented artificial intelligence, additive manufacturing and industry 4.0 initiatives. Mike has also led modelling and simulation activities for the E-7A Wedgetail program.


In addition to his technology leadership roles, Mike deployed as part of Operation ASTUTE and has led teams involved in operations coordination, supply chain management, acquisition and sustainment in support of numerous ADF aircraft fleets including the AP-3C Orion, P-8A Poseidon, E-7A Wedgetail and C-130J Hercules.


Mike Moroney holds Masters degrees in Business and Systems Engineering as well as an Advanced Diploma of Aviation. In his spare time, Mike likes to spend time with his family pursuing outdoor activities and is a keen supporter of the Canberra Brave and Winnipeg Jets ice hockey teams.
