After graduation of Air Force Academy Jari "Miki" Mikkonen started his career as a fighter pilot in Karelia Air Command. He worked there as a pilot, flight instructor and flight commander. He got his F/A-18 Strike Fighter Pilot and Instructor Pilot training in US Navy, Lemoore in 1995. After General Staff Officers course he returned back to Karelia Air Command and worked as a staff officer and as a Squadron Commander in FS 31. After the most active flight phase of career he worked in Air Force Command Finland in several positions. Mikkonen was a member in Defences Forces transformation planning team in Defence Staff in 2011 - 2012. He commanded Karelia Air Command 2015 - 2017. The last position in FiAF was Chief of Staff AFCOMFIN in 2017 - 2020.
LtGen Mikkonen changed his career from Air Force to logistics in 2021, when he started as a Chief of Logistics in Defence Command Finland. As a Chief of Finnish Defence Forces Logistic Command he worked from 1st of July 2022 to 31st of October 2024. Mikkonen started as a Deputy Chief of Staff Armament and Logistics in 1st of November 2024. In his current position he is responsible of materiel capability building (procurements), maintenance and life cycle management of materiel. He guides FDFLOGCOM and is responsible of development of logistics system including international co-operation, host nation support and military mobility. LtGen Mikkonen enjoys ice hockey, golf, skiing and hunting.
