Simon Sparkes

Simon Sparkes is a highly experienced military test pilot and project manager for search and rescue (SAR) and maritime helicopters at the Norwegian Defence Materiel Agency, a position he has held since 2021. With over 40 years of engineering and flying experience, Simon has earned a distinguished reputation in the aviation field, particularly as a test pilot and instructor. His extensive background includes key roles as the lead Navy Command officer for ship clearance integration in 2013 and as a maritime aviation advisor to the Director General of the Military Aviation Authority in 2012. Previously qualified as a Merlin helicopter instructor, Simon has played a pivotal role in simulator acceptance, training and operational readiness in both the UK and Norway. In addition to his technical expertise in safety management and ship air interface clearance processes, Simon has successfully led numerous projects, significantly reshaping training protocols within the Empire Test Pilots’ School to align with EASA standards. He has amassed over 1,000 hours of airborne instructional time, conducting both basic and advanced operational training, particularly on the AW101 and a number of simulator platforms. With a deep understanding of rotary wing platforms and avionics technologies, Simon has contributed to critical training programs and operational policies in both the military and civil rotary wing environment. His comprehensive experience, effective communication skills, and nuanced understanding of military and civilian regulatory environments make him a valuable contributor to discussions and advancements in defence aviation.
