Major General Thomas O'Connor

Commanding General US Army Aviation and Missile Command

Maj. Gen. Tom O’Connor assumed command of the U.S. Army Aviation and Missile Command on Aug. 12, 2022. As the commander, he leads more than 12,000 Soldiers and civilians in providing aviation, missile and test measurement and diagnostic equipment sustainment support to the joint warfighter to enable readiness. O’Connor hails from Massapequa Park, New York. He graduated from the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, New York, in 1994 and was commissioned as a second lieutenant in Army Aviation. His operational assignments include serving in leadership and staff positions from platoon leader to deputy commanding general with service in the 3rd Armored Cavalry Regiment, the 25th Infantry Division, the 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault), the 1st Armored Division, and the 1st Infantry Division. His most recent leadership position prior to taking command of AMCOM was Deputy Commanding General – Operations of 8th Army, Korea. Maj. Gen. O’Connor’s assignments outside of the operational force include service at the National Training Center, deputy director of the Department of the Army G-3/5/7 Aviation, and as the Aviation Division Chief in the Office of the Department of the Army G8 deputy chief of staff. Additionally, he served as the deputy commander of the U.S. Army Aviation Center of Excellence. Maj. Gen. O’Connor’s experience includes multiple deployments in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom, Operation Enduring Freedom and Operation Atlantic Resolve. Maj. Gen. O’Connor holds a Bachelor of Science in Engineering Management from the U.S. Army Military Academy, a Master’s of Arts in National Security and Strategic Studies from the U.S. Naval War College, and a Master’s of Science in National Resource Strategy from the National Defense University’s Eisenhower School. His awards and decorations include five Legions of Merit, three Bronze Star Medals, four Meritorious Service Medals, Air Medal with valor, two Air Medals, two Army Commendation Medals, two Army Achievement Medals, the Valorous Unit Award, two Meritorious Unit Awards, the Combat Action Badge, the Master Aviator Badge, the Parachutist Badge, the Air Assault Badge and the Army Staff Badge.
