Lt Col Rickard Rörberg is a senior helicopter pilot, instructor, and military leader with more than 35 years of service in the Swedish Armed Forces. Since beginning his career in 1987 and earning his pilot wings in 1991, he has served in a wide range of operational, instructional, and leadership roles both in Sweden and across several multinational environments. Rickard’s operational background spans multiple helicopter platforms, including the UH-60 Black Hawk, AS 332 Super Puma, AB 412, and Bo 105 with more than 3000 flight hours. He has led flight operations in complex and high-risk theatres and has completed several deployments to Afghanistan, where he conducted medical evacuation missions, led provincial coordination efforts, and served within multinational staffs. 2018 he served in a U.S.-led composite unit in Kandahar training Afghan helicopter crews in tactical helicopter flying (UH-60) and developed SOPs for Afghanistan’s first UH-60 Squadron and a corresponding training concept. From 2023-present, Rickard serves as the Chief Instructor at the Multinational Helicopter Training Centre (MHTC), where he plays a central role in strengthening European rotary-wing interoperability and capability development. His responsibilities included planning and delivering MHTC courses and training activities, developing, and updating course syllabi, supervising, and standardising all training, leading the multinational Mentor Team during exercises, and directing updates to Tactics, Techniques and Procedures (TTPs) and associated publications. Between 2021 and 2023, Rickard served at the European Defence Agency (EDA) on the Core Planning Team, managing four major helicopter programs across 14 member states. In this capacity, he also acted as an instructor and mentor within EDA’s helicopter training initiatives, contributing to the advancement of European tactical aviation capabilities. Within Sweden, Rickard has held key leadership roles including Helicopter Squadron Commander and Personnel Manager for the nation’s helicopter pilots. He has been responsible for capability development, operational planning, training, career progression, and leadership training at the Air Force Weaponry and Leadership School. He is also the first Swedish pilot certified as a Helicopter Tactics Instructor (HTIC) through the EDA. Today, Rickard continues to support the development of helicopter operations, multinational training concepts, and advanced tactical instruction within the Swedish Armed Forces and the broader European defence community.
