Lieutenant General Dragoş-Dumitru Iacob was appointed as Romanian Deputy Chief of Defence Staff, on January 15th, 2024

He was born on June 23rd, 1972, in Pașcani, Iași County. In 1990, he graduated the Military High School “Ştefan cel Mare” in Câmpulung Moldovenesc, and subsequently, in 1993, the Military School of Active Tank Officers “Mihai Viteazul”, Piteşti, as valedictorian.

In parallel with fulfilling the duties of the positions he was assigned to, he continued his career development by completing specialized courses. He graduated the United States Army Armor School, Fort Knox in 1997, “Combined Armed Courses” of the Command and Staff Faculty as top of his class, in 2006, and the “Land Forces Postgraduate Leadership Course” in 2011, both at the National Defense University “Carol I”. Also graduated the courses of Royal College of Defence Studies, London, in 2012. In 2013, he earned a Master’s degree in “Strategy and International Security” from the King’s College, London.

Lieutenant General Iacob’s professional experience includes positions at the tactical, operational and strategic level within the Land Forces, as follows: tank platoon commander, tank company commander, staff officer at tank brigade and infantry division level, Commander of the 814th Armoured Battalion “Mihai Vodă”, Chief of Training Section at the 4th Infantry Division “Gemina”, Deputy Chief of Romanian Land Forces TRADOC, Commander of the 15th Mechanized Brigade “Podu Înalt”, and Chief of the Training and Doctrine Directorate at the Romanian Defence Staff. Lieutenant General Iacob was Commander of the 2nd Infantry Division “Getica”, from February 21st, 2020 to February 28th, 2022. Afterwards, between March 1st , 2022 and January 15th, 2024 he commanded the Multinational Corps South-East.

He participated in two missions in the theatre of operations in Afghanistan.

Throughout his career, he was rewarded with important distinctions and honorary titles, as: the Emblem of Honour of the Land Forces Staff, the Emblem of Honour of the Romanian General Staff, the “Honour of the Romanian Army” Emblem, the Emblem of Merit in the Service of the Romanian Army, class III, the non-Article 5 NATO Medal, the “Military Virtue” Order in the rank of Knight, and the “Military Virtue” Order in the rank of Officer.

Lieutenant General Iacob is married and has two children
