Colonel Aron Kalmus was born in Tallinn, Estonia in 1974. He graduated from Pääsküla High School in 1993 and consequently started his conscription service in Kalevi Single Infantry Battalion. He graduated from Non-Commissioned Officer School in 1994. After conscription, COL Kalmus studied at the Finnish Military Academy and graduated the Officer Basic Course in 1996. His active service continued in Kalevi Single Infantry Battalion as junior officer – first as mortar platoon leader and later at different junior staff officer positions in Kalevi Single Infantry Battalion Staff. From 2000 until 2002, Colonel Kalmus served as staff officer in Signal Battalion of the Headquarters of the Estonian Defence Forces.
In 2004, Colonel Kalmus graduated from Senior Staff Officer Course of the Finnish Military Academy and for eight years served at various positions in the Headquarters of the Estonian Land Forces, starting as a staff officer, then as Infantry Inspector and Chief of G7. In 2006-2007, Colonel Kalmus was deployed to Iraq for a six-month rotation. In 2008-2009, Colonel Kalmus studied and graduated from the Finnish Military Academy General Staff Course, obtaining a Master’s degree in Military Science.
In 2012–2015, Colonel Kalmus commanded the 1st Infantry Brigade in Tapa Military Compound. In 2015, Colonel Kalmus was appointed the Chief of J3 of the Headquarters of the Estonian Defence Forces. In 2018, Colonel Kalmus was assigned the duties of Commander of NATO Force Integration Unit, Estonia. After the establishment of Multinational Division North (MND-N), Colonel Kalmus served as Deputy Chief of Staff Operations of MND-N in Ādaži Military Base, Latvia. In 2022–2025, Colonel Kalmus served as Deputy Assistant Chief of Staff of Intelligence in Joint Force Command Brunssum, Netherlands.
Since August 2025, Colonel Kalmus holds the position of Deputy Commander of the Estonian Division.
Colonel Kalmus has received the following awards and decorations, Order of the Cross of Eagle – IV class, Defence Minister service medal – III class, Defence Forces service medal, Defence Forces Army Officer Golden Cross, The Army Commendation Medal.
Colonel Aron Kalmus is married to Eve and has two sons and a daughter.
