Brigadier General Fernando Ruiz Gómez was born in Ronda (Spain) on the 22nd of January, 1967. He joined the Army Military Academy (Zaragoza) in 1988, graduating and being commissioned as 1st Lieutenant (Infantry) in 1993. He served as a platoon leader for four years in the Spanish Mountain Brigade. He was promoted to Captain in 1997 and served in the same unit as a Company Commander until 2004. During this period, he was deployed to BiH (SFOR) and to Kosovo (KFOR) commanding his company. He was promoted to Major in 2004, attending the Army High Staff College (Madrid) where he graduated with honors in 2005. As a Major, he served in the Army Staff Ops Division as a staff analyst for almost 3 years. During this period, he was deployed to the Antarctic. Later, he served in a Mountain Unit battalion as Ops Chief for 2 years. During this period, he was deployed to Afghanistan with his battalion as Ops chief. Finally, he served in the High Staff of the Spanish Light Division in Madrid for 3 years until he was promoted to Lieutenant Colonel in 2013. As a Lieutenant Colonel, he was posted to a Mountain Battalion as a Battalion Commander, this time in the city of Pamplona. And, after, as the Chief of the Operations Branch at the General Staff of the Armed Forces Intelligence Centre. During this period, he was deployed to Jordan in the frame of the Operation Gallant Phoenix. Moreover, as a Lieutenant Colonel, he graduated in 2019 in the 134 Senior Course of the NATO Defence College in Rome. He also attended several national and international courses in Spain and Germany. He was promoted to Colonel in 2020. As a Colonel, he was posted to the Land Forces Headquarters as the Preparation Commander until he was promoted to Brigadier General in 2024. As a Brigadier General, he was posted to “Guzman el Bueno” Brigade in Córdoba as Commander-in-chief. He is fluent in English. BG Ruiz has been awarded several national and international decorations. He is married and is father of three children.
