Dr. Mike Dalzell

Capability Advisor: Mounted Close Combat Dstl

Dr Mike Dalzell graduated with a BEng(hons) in Mechanical Engineering in 1999 from Cranfield University (at the then Royal Military College of Science), followed by a PhD in terminal ballistics in 2004.
Mike joined the Defence Science and Technology Laboratory (Dstl) in 2004, working initially in the Physical Protection Group in the field of mine and IED protection. He was involved directly in the development of technology to support Urgent Operational Requirements in Iraq and Afghanistan, including the rapid acquisition of Protected Mobility vehicles such as Mastiff and Ridgeback.
From 2010 to 2012 Mike was lucky enough to be posted under the Exchange of Scientists and Engineers Programme to the US Army Research Lab at Aberdeen Proving Ground, Maryland, where he continued to work on protection technologies for mounted and dismounted soldiers.
On return to the UK, he took up his role as a Capability Advisor – initially within the area of survivability, and later into the wider realms of Mounted Close Combat, working with staff from Army Headquarters and DE&S to identify areas in which Science and Technology can be exploited to support capability. 
As a Reserve officer in the Royal and Royal Wessex Yeomanry, Mike has also experienced the ‘user perspective’ of military vehicle technology - including mobilisation for the invasion of Iraq in 2003, during which he led a Troop of CBRN specialists. In his reserve capacity, he is currently posted as an instructor to the Land Warfare School at Warminster.
