After reading engineering at St John's College, Cambridge and enjoying a brief career in industry, I joined the Royal Artillery in 1981. My military service has covered a reasonably standard mix of regimental and staff appointments including commanding 1st Regiment Royal Horse Artillery. I have deployed on operations to Northern Ireland, the Balkans and as Deputy Commander of 1st (United Kingdom) Armoured Division during the invasion of Iraq in 2003 and the months immediately following it. My latter roles were in the people area — firstly as the Army's Director General Personnel, then as Military Secretary and, between 2013 and April 2016, as Chief of Defence People. In September 2016 having left the Army, I became Chief Executive of SSAFA, the Armed Forces charity, an organization that seeks to be the trusted source of support for serving military personnel, veterans, and their families when they need help. I became the Master Gunner St James's Park on 1st May 2017. I am also the Vice Lord-Lieutenant of Wiltshire, a Governor of Sedbergh School, Patron of Fighting with Pride, a charity set up to support LGBTQ+ veterans, a trustee of both the Armed Forces Parliamentary Trust and also the On-Course Foundation and I am the President of Tidworth Garrison Golf Club. Sally and I have been married for thirty-eight years and have two sons in their thirties, one of whom is serving in the Royal Artillery. My hobbies include bad golf, slow swimming, pedestrian skiing, and the brute force part of gardening.
