Deputy Director Italian Defence Staff - Joint Capability Directorate

Born in Trieste in 1969, he joined in 1988 the Naval Academy in Livorno and graduated in 1992. From 1993 to 1995, he completed the US Navy Flight Training Program, graduating as Military Pilot in 1994 and as Helicopter Pilot in 1995. His major operational assignments have been: - In 2023, Force Commander of Operation EUNAVFOR ATALANTA for the repression of piracy, armed robbery and illicit activities carried out in the North West Indian Ocean; - In 2022, Force Commander of Operation EUNAVFORMED IRINI for the implementation of the United Nations Security Council resolutions related to the arms embargo toward Libya; - Commanding Officer of DDG Durand de la Penne (2016 – 2017), FFG Grecale (2010-2011) and Patrol Ship Libra (2000-2001); - Executive Officer of Italian Navy Flagship, Aircraft Carrier Giuseppe Garibaldi (2008-2010); - From 1995 to 2001, participating to NATO Operation SHARP GUARD, a deployment in Southern East Asia , maritime security and national fishery protection operations in the central Mediterranean Sea. His major staff assignments have been: - Deputy Director of the Joint Capability Directorate, Italian Joint Defence Staff (current). - Deputy Director of the 3rd Department, Maritime Policy and Plans, Italian Navy General Staff (2024); - Assistant of the Italian Navy Personnel Director, Italian Navy General Staff (2022-2023); - Head of Capability Development Office, Italian Joint Defense Staff (2020-2021); - Head of the Maritime Strategy and International Relations Office at the Italian Navy General Staff (2017-2020); - Head of Plans and Policy Division (ACOS N5) at NATO Maritime Command in Northwood, UK (2013-2016); - Staff Officer for the Assistant of Chief of Defence , Italian Joint Defence Staff (2011-2013); - Midshipmen Senior Commander at the Italian Navy Academy in Livorno (2005-2007); - Staff Officer at the Naval Aviation Department, Italian Navy General Staff (2001-2005). He holds: - a Master Degree in Maritime and Naval Sciences at the University of Pisa (1992); - a Bachelor Degree in Political Sciences at the University of Roma Tre (2003); - a Master in International Strategic-Military Studies at the University in Milano (2008); - a Master in Leadership, Change Management and Digital Transformation at the University of Salerno (2021); - a Master in Global Security at the University in Torino (2023); - the Title of Law Counsellor of the Armed Forces. He has published the following articles: - Mass Media e Operations other than War – 1998 - The evolution of the war’s concept till modern time – 2003 - Development and future prospective of maritime Unmanned Air Vehicles – 2005 - Leadership, Change Management and Digital transformation” - 2021 - The vulnerability of critical underwater infrastructures: possible solutions to pursue at the national level and on a bilateral and multilateral basis to protect national interests from malicious actions by state and non-state actors - 2023. Married with two children, he has a personal fascination for history and enjoys mountain walking and skiing
