Admiral Jorge Manuel Nobre de Sousa has been the Chief of Staff of the Navy and National Maritime Authority since December 27, 2024. Born in 1963, he entered the Naval Academy in 1981 and was promoted to Midshipman in 1987. Specializing in submarine weapons, he served as Executive Officer on the patrol vessels Cacine and Cunene, as Head of Service on the frigates Comandante Roberto Ivens and Corte-Real, as Executive Officer and Operations Officer on the corvette Baptista de Andrade, and as Operations Officer on the frigate Corte-Real.

He also served on the staff of the Portuguese Naval Force. In his last commission at sea, he commanded the frigate Álvares Cabral. During his naval commissions, he served four times in the NATO-led Standing Naval Force Atlantic, participating in Operations Sharp Guard and Active Endeavor, both aboard flagship vessels, and in the NATO-led Maritime Group 1, participating in Operation Ocean Shield as flag captain. Within the Western European Union (WEU), he participated in Operation Sharp Vigilance and, nationally, in Operation Cruzeiro do Sul.

On land, he served in the Office of the Chief of the Naval Staff, in the Information and Public Relations Service, in the Naval Tactics Training Center, being responsible in the Analysis, Development and Training Office for the Anti-Submarine Warfare area, and in the Naval Command as Head of the Communications and Information Systems Division and the Operations Division and, later, as Chief of Staff. He also served in the Planning Division of the Naval Staff, as Assistant Officer for Strategic and Force Planning, and at NATO HQ Supreme Allied Command Transformation, in Norfolk, as Branch Head Operational Command and Control.

As Commodore, he commanded the Marine Corps and, after being promoted to Rear Admiral, served as Deputy Chief of Staff of the Joint Command for Military Operations. As Vice Admiral, he served as Naval Commander, Chief of Staff of the Joint Command for Military Operations, and 2nd Operational Commander of the Armed Forces. Throughout his career, he was awarded the Order of Avis Military medal, military medals for Distinguished Service, Military Merit, the Naval Cross, Exemplary Conduct, commemorative medals for special service commissions, and medals commemorating NATO and WEU operations. Admiral Nobre de Sousa is married and has a son.
