Aurelijus Alasauskas began his service in Lithuanian Armed Forces in 1994 by enrolling in the Military Academy of Lithuania, and he obtained the rank of Lieutenant in 1996. While serving as a Platoon and Company commander in Algirdas Battalion, he had an invaluable opportunity to learn and gain experience in Western military training and readiness assurance methods, as British, Swedish, and Danish military advisors-instructors operated in an integrated manner within the unit under his command. The officer later applied this experience while participating in a mission in Bosnia and Herzegovina, serving at the Lithuanian Armed Forces Non-Commissioned Officer School, and the Lithuanian Military Academy.
During his further service, Aurelijus Alasauskas gained staff officer experience, holding various positions in the headquarters of different units of the Lithuanian Army. As the Head of the G3 section of the Iron Wolf Brigade, he was responsible for ensuring the brigade’s combat readiness and organizing military training in cooperation with the Danish Army Division, where intensive military training was conducted. While serving in the NATO Transformation Headquarters in Europe, Aurelijus Alasauskas was responsible for coordinating land forces capability development and interoperability between NATO headquarters and Land forces of the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, Denmark, Norway, Bulgaria and Slovakia. He also oversaw quality and quantity requirements for the NATO functional directions in the areas such as Artillery, Non-Kinetic Operations, Emergency Response, Maneuver and Psychological Operations.
In 2020, Aurelijus Alasauskas was promoted to the rank of Colonel and appointed as the Head of the J3 Division of the Defense Staff. During his service in this position, he was responsible for organizing the Army’s activities during the COVID-19 pandemic, coordinating the withdrawal of troops from Afghanistan, the evacuation of interpreters assisting Lithuania, managing support for other state institutions in countering illegal migration, assessing increasing threats from Belarus and Russia, and evaluating readiness in the context of Russia’s war in Ukraine. Under his leadership, Army readiness system was implemented to Lithuanian military units.
Throughout his service, Aurelijus Alasauskas commanded Algirdas Infantry Battalion and "Žemaitija" Infantry Brigade, during which he established, maintained and expanded excellent relations with international partners, particularly with the US PAANG 56 IBCT, 28 ID, the US Security Forces Support Element, rotational US battalions deployed in Lithuania, Portuguese Marines and Redeployable Security Element.
In 2024, Aurelijus Alasauskas was appointed as the Deputy Commander of the Land Forces, and he was granted the rank of Brigadier General. In January 2025, Brigadier General Aurelijus Alasauskas was appointed as the Commander of the newly restored Lithuanian Army First Division.
