Lieutenant-Colonel (Retired) Plater has served as both an Engineer officer and Artillery officer in the Canadian Armed Forces. His first regimental posting was with 5e Régiment d’Artillerie Légère du Canada where he served in a wide variety of regimental posts and deployed to Bosnia. His second regimental tour came at 4 Engineer Support Regiment as a Squadron Commander. He also served at the School of Military Engineering as the Senior Instructor and the Deputy Commandant. His last post was as the Section head for Mobility, Counter-Mobility and Survivability equipment. He retired from the Canadian Army, after 26 years’ service, in 2010 to assume a position as a program manager for Defence Research and Development Canada as the Program Manager for the Army’s Combat Systems and The Force R&D programs. From 2017 until 2020 he was the Project Manager for the Canadian Headquarters Shelter System project responsible for a new fleet of deployable tactical camp equipment and for in-service support for deployable equipment. In 2020 he joined the NATO Support and Procurement Agency as the Branch Chief of the Planning and Liaison Team. From April to October 2023, he was the Manager of the Workshop. In November 2023, he became the Programme Manager for Air and Land Combat Systems. Andrew holds Bachelor’s Degrees in Science (Acadia) and in Chemical Engineering (TUNS), as well as a Master’s Degree in Applied Military Science (RMC). He is a graduate of the Land Force Technical Staff Course, the Army Command and Staff Course, the Canadian Forces Joint Command and Staff Program, and is a qualified Project Manager of DND.
