Japan's prime minister, Shinzo Abe, has identified the continent of Africa as the engine room for economic development in the 21st century and pledged $32 billion in aid, which is also to help in the fight against militant Islamists.
"Africa will be a growth centre over the next couple of decades until the middle of this century... now is the time for us to invest in Africa," Abe said at a conference co-hosted with the African Union, World Bank and the UN.
