EUNAVFOR, CMF and NATO confirmed to speak at the African Maritime Security Summit

20% of global trade passes through the Gulf of Aden, meaning considerable effort is given to safeguarding this strategic SLOC. This includes the Big Three missions – EU Naval Force’s Operation ATALANTA, NATO’s Ocean Shield and the Combined Maritime Forces’ Task F151. Representatives from these three organisations will be outlining their strategies at the African Maritime Security Summit (AFSEC) in February:

· Michael Soula, Deputy Assistant Secretary General for Operations, NATO

· Major General Smith, Commander, EU Naval Forces

· Captain Bill Nault, USN, Chief of Staff, Combined Maritime Force

The summit will focus on the region’s maritime security from a multidimensional perspective, specifically the measures of the international community and nations in the region to increase security and protect maritime wealth. Sessions will also explore the future of international maritime activity and cooperation in the region, with senior-level, African nation representation including:

· His Excellency Dr Abdiweli Mohamed Ali Gaas, President of Puntland, Government of Puntland

· Major General Ngewa Mukala, Commander, Kenyan Navy

· Major General Ahmed al-Ashwal, Chief of General Staff, Republic of Yemen

· Major General Ahmed Shiyam, Chief of Defence Force, Maldives National Defence Force

· Brigadier General Rogastian Laswai, Commander, Tanzania Navy

· Brigadier Leopold Payet, Chief of Defence Forces, Seychelles People's Defence Forces

Additionally, the national capabilities of the 20 signatory nations of the Djibouti Code of Conduct, and how they can operate together more effectively to provide collective security will be addressed. These countries range from Saudi Arabia to the Comoros Islands, and while the challenges they face are diverse, the maritime security objectives are shared.
