9/11 was a turning point for the US Coast, marking a clear delineation between its old mission and a new expanded scope of responsibilities. Mike Tangora is the Deputy Assistant Commandant for Acquisition for the US Coast Guard. He is responsible for acquisition programmes providing for fisheries protection, port security, environmental protection, SAR, migrant interdiction - as well as its responsibilities to the US Navy in times of war. Small boats, OPVs and OPCs (offshore patrol cutters) play a large part in meeting these diverse missions.
