Commander in Chief of the Fleet Brazilian Navy

Vice-Admiral JOSÉ AUGUSTO VIEIRA DA CUNHA DE MENEZES was born in Rio de Janeiro on June 18th 1962, graduated from the Brazilian Naval Academy in 1983, when he was declared midshipman and appointed to his first ship, the Sailing Ship “Cisne Branco”. He was promoted to first lieutenant in 1986 and held the Officers Engineer Course.

During his career he has experienced being Commander of the Minesweepers Ship “Araçatuba” and the Destroyer “Para”. As Captain, Admiral Cunha served at the 4th Naval District - in the Brazilian Amazon-, as the Chief of Staff, and in 2008 he was designated to the Inter-American Defense Board, in the United States.

In 2012, he was promoted to Rear-Admiral, and assumed the position of the Head of the Logistic Section, on the General Staff.  For more than one year, Rear-Admiral Cunha was the Commander of the 1st Fleet Division and was also the Secretary of the Interministerial Comission for Sea Resources.  As Vice-Admiral, he was the Chief of Staff of Commander of the Brazilian Navy and the Commander of the 1st Naval District.

Since March 25 th, 2019 he holds the position of the Commander in Chief of the Fleet.
