Juan Hernández Gutiérrez was born in Madrid on August 3rd, 1961. He grow up and was educated in Madrid and, once joined the Army, in Zaragoza. He was graduated from the Academia General Militar (Spanish Army Officers Academy) in Zaragoza in 1986 and was commissioned into the Infantry Corps as a Lieutenant. He got the specialization to command Parachute units and Special Operations Units.
GB Hernández has served in several regimental and battalion appointments:
As a lieutenant: 17th Infantry Regiment “Aragon” (as platoon leader); 6th Special Operations Group «La Victoria».
As a captain (company commander): 34th Infantry Regiment “Granada” and 6th Infantry Regiment “Saboya”.
As a lieutenant colonel (battalion commander) 54th Infantry Regiment “Fuerzas Regulares de Ceuta”.
As a colonel (regiment commander) 67th Infantry Regiment “Tercio Viejo de Sicilia”.
As brigade general, he headed the 2nd General Sub-inspection of the Army (accommodation, welfare and security in bases and barracks of the southern region of Spain).
He is currently appointed as Deputy Director of Doctrine, Organization and Materials, in the Mando de Adiestramiento y Doctrina.
As a general staff officer (major and lieutenant colonel), he has also served in other appointments, mainly related with Joint and Land Doctrine, tactics and procedures.
GB Hernandez is a graduate of the Spanish Army Command and Staff College.
Among his operational duties, he has been the SO1 of the Spanish Battalion (SFOR) deployed in Bosnia and Herzegovina in 1997, and the G9-coordination cell of the Multinational Division South-East HQ in Irak. He has been National Delegate in the NATO Land Operations Working Group, and in the Finabel Alfa (Effective engagement) and Tango (Concepts development) Working Groups.
GB Hernandez is married to Teresa and they have three daughters.
