Exclusive Interview: Why Air Defence Needs More Than Technology
As air forces modernise and air defence systems become increasingly automated, one critical challenge is often overlooked: people. In this exclusive interview, Captain Maria Holz, Deputy Air Force Chair of the German Armed Forces Association (DBWV), discusses why personnel readiness, recruitment, skills development and organisational adaptability are becoming just as important as technological superiority in strengthening Europe's air defence capabilities. The interview also explores the growing role of automation and AI in air defence operations, the challenge of countering mass drone attacks, and why Europe must invest in sovereign defence capabilities to ensure long-term operational readiness.
