This workshop will offer attendees the opportunity to better understand Distributed Ledger Technology (DLT) /Blockchain and its applications within Defence and across government. A number of case studies from government, defence and the private sector will be covered as well as a run through of various proof of concepts that have been developed within Defence and the areas that have been identified as priorities for the application of this technology. In particular the use of this technology to secure the supply chain and provide assurance beyond reasonable doubt that material has arrived untampered with and as intended.
At its core Blockchain is an accounting system tracking the movement of value between users. Unlike traditional double-ledger accounting, there is no need for a trusted third party to audit and assure the transactions between users. This is achieved through a combination of peer-to-peer networks, consensus mechanisms and cryptography. As a result the Blockchain network is self-organising with members auditing all transactions in a decentralised manner. These transactions are grouped and stored in blocks and built upon each other, thus creating a chain of blocks. Because Blockchain is decentralised and secured through algorithms, capabilities previously unattainable are now possible. Blockchain has the potential to revolutionise how we transact with one another forever, from how we manage who uses our data to how we buy goods.
This workshop will include group discussions that examine these case studies to identify potential Blockchain applications in the attendee’s area of Defence. The feasibility of these potential use cases will be assessed, investigating the value they could create and requirements for implementation.
