Colonel Alex Porter joined the Army in 1996 as a Mounted Dutyman in the Life Guards (Household Cavalry Mounted Regiment). After 2 years ceremonial duty, he was selected to attend the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst where he commissioned into the Queen’s Royal Hussars (Challenger 2 MBT Cavalry Regiment) as a 2nd Lieutenant in 1999.
Appointments and deployments whilst at regimental duty included troop leading in Kosovo and Iraq, operations officer in Canada and Iraq, and as a sub-unit commander he commanded a light-role infantry company in Helmand Province, Afghanistan, on Operation Herrick 15. Colonel Porter commanded the Queen’s Royal Hussars from 2014 to 2017, including time as an Armoured Infantry Battlegroup Commander within 20 Armoured Infantry Brigade.
Colonel Porter was the Military Assistant to the Supreme Allied Commander Europe in Belgium and has recently returned to assume the appointment of Assistant Head Concepts for the British Army, working from Army Headquarters in Andover UK.
