The collapse of the Soviet Union cut the level of the submarine threat for Western defence planners, but the ongoing acquisition of short-range, ultra-quiet non-nuclear- powered boats by nations around the world has brought the submarine threat back into focus. The worry now is less about a worldwide naval battle between the West and the former USSR and more about the threat posed by these subs to shipping and Western naval vessels in conflict areas.
