Military airlift is an integral part of aerial warfare and in similar fashion to naval warfare, is not an end but a means. Its main objective is to support, sustain and assist ground forces. This vision is summed up in the (US) Air Force Doctrine Document 2-6.1 (13 November 1999) "Military Airlift" as follows:
