While defence departments and industry have been pouring money into the very high power end of the spectrum, struggling to come up with ways to make lasers usable, portable and generally militarily viable, the commercial world has quietly been working away to make directed energy work in a huge range of fields from media to medicine and communications. As with other areas of defence, this commercial ubiquity may just usher in a revolution that will see DEW on the battlefield in the very near future, especially if sights can be lowered from the strategic level, to more of a tactical approach.
